“The sacred cow I’m most eager to sacrifice is the obsession with tradition as the ultimate marker of quality and authenticity. In the wine world, tradition often becomes a crutch, stifling creativity and innovation in favour of preserving the status quo. While respecting history is important, clinging to it blindly limits the industry’s ability to adapt to modern consumers who crave connection, relevance, and inclusivity.”
Let’s dive in!
Uncorking the Future of Wine: Insights with Priscilla Hennekam.
When Dan Pallotta said, "The most extraordinary people in the world today don't have a career. They have a mission," he could have been describing Priscilla Hennekam. After years in traditional wine industry roles spanning sales, marketing, and oenotourism, Hennekam had an epiphany: the wine industry's devotion to tradition was becoming its biggest liability. Instead of connecting people, wine culture was creating barriers through its complex rituals and technical jargon.
This realisation sparked a mission: to democratise wine appreciation and drag the industry into the 21st century. Today, her "Rethinking the Wine Industry" platform reaches over 10,000 subscribers across 65 countries, championing innovations from AI-powered tasting experiences to blockchain wine authentication. Her provocative ideas—like removing wine from its luxury pedestal and reimagining it as a tool for connection—are challenging industry orthodoxy and inspiring a new generation of wine enthusiasts.
Dismantling the Ivory Tower
At the heart of Hennekam's mission lies a radical proposition: removing wine from its pedestal as a luxury product and reimagining it as a universal tool for connection and storytelling. "The traditional reverence for wine as an exclusive, ritual-laden experience often alienates casual drinkers," she explains. This perspective has resonated deeply with her global audience, suggesting that the industry is ready for change.
"We're seeing exciting innovations like personalised wine experiences that harness AI to craft wines uniquely tailored to individual tastes," Hennekam shares. "This approach puts the consumer's preferences at the forefront, celebrating diversity in flavour and experience rather than adhering to traditional notions of what constitutes 'good wine.'"
The Blueprint for Wine 2.0
Hennekam's vision for the future of wine is both ambitious and practical. "Wine 2.0 would be a global renaissance centred on inclusivity, personalisation, and emotional connection," she declares. "It would dismantle the traditional barriers of exclusivity and complexity, replacing them with a system that empowers every individual to see wine as an approachable, meaningful part of their life."
Perhaps most controversially, she advocates for the death of the "good vs. bad wine" dichotomy. Instead, she proposes a culture that celebrates diverse, subjective experiences, supported by a global sensory insights database that would revolutionise wine discovery much like music streaming services curate personalised playlists.
The Sacred Cow That Needs to Go
When asked about the industry's biggest obstacle, Hennekam doesn't hesitate: "The sacred cow I'm most eager to sacrifice is the obsession with tradition as the ultimate marker of quality and authenticity. While respecting history is important, clinging to it blindly limits the industry's ability to adapt to modern consumers who crave connection, relevance, and inclusivity."
Technology as the Great Enabler
Looking ahead, Hennekam sees technology as the key to transforming how we produce, market, and experience wine. She predicts that AI and machine learning will enable truly personalised wine experiences, while blockchain technology will ensure unprecedented transparency in wine authenticity and provenance.
"Blockchain will build trust in an industry often clouded by counterfeiting and misinformation," she explains. "By simply scanning a QR code, consumers can access a tamper-proof record of a wine's journey—from the vineyard to the bottle."
Virtual and augmented reality technologies will democratise wine tourism, allowing enthusiasts to experience vineyards from anywhere in the world." Imagine wandering through a Bordeaux vineyard from your living room, guided by a winemaker, or using AR to visualise the terroir as you sip a glass of wine," she suggests.
Reimagining the Tasting Room
Hennekam's vision for the future of wine experiences extends to a complete transformation of the traditional tasting room into an "Immersive Wine Odyssey." "Imagine stepping into a space that feels less like a tasting room and more like stepping into the vineyard's soul," she enthuses. "Your wine glass comes alive with swirling holograms that mirror the flavours you taste. As the wine hits your palate, the glass reveals a dynamic journey—a cascade of fruits, spices, and textures, each unfolding before your eyes in a mesmerising dance."
This multi-sensory experience would blend virtual and physical elements, allowing visitors to step into virtual vineyards, interact with dynamic wine presentations, and connect with the emotional journey of winemaking. "It's no longer just about tasting," she explains. "It's about creating a memory that lingers as long as the wine on the palate."
South Australia: Leading the Wine Revolution
As a wine futurist based in Adelaide, Hennekam sees unique potential in South Australian wine regions. "South Australia's younger winemakers are shaking up conventions, embracing minimal intervention wines, co-ferments, and wild, experimental blends," she notes. "This freedom to innovate is less common in Europe, where strict appellation rules often limit experimentation."
The Counterintuitive Truth About Wine Knowledge
Through her "Vino Visionaries" podcast, Hennekam has discovered something surprising: wine knowledge can actually be a barrier to enjoyment. "The real 'aha' moment? Wine doesn't need to be understood to be loved," she reflects. "When we strip away the jargon and pretension, we make space for something far more powerful: connection. Wine becomes a tool for bringing people together, for creating shared experiences, and for sparking joy—not a test of knowledge or sophistication."
Signs of Progress
Despite the industry's reputation for resistance to change, Hennekam sees encouraging signs of progress. She points to the industry's growing embrace of sustainability, increasing celebration of diverse grape varieties and wine regions, and investment in technology for better accessibility. The rise of diverse voices in wine, including initiatives promoting women and BIPOC winemakers (those involved in the wine industry who identify as Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour), is reshaping an industry long dominated by one demographic.

Looking Ahead
As the wine industry stands at a crossroads between tradition and innovation, Hennekam's vision offers a compelling path forward. "This isn't about erasing tradition," she emphasises. "It's about making wine relevant and accessible to everyone who wants to explore its magic."
Her approach to innovation draws inspiration from Nelson Mandela's words: "It always seems impossible until it's done." Through her platform and advocacy, Hennekam is not just starting a conversation—she's leading a movement to transform how we think about, experience, and share wine.
"Over the next three years, we will roll out Wine 2.0 in stages," she declares, "creating a transformative space where bold ideas and innovative approaches become reality. This is not just about starting a conversation—it's about leading a movement to make the unimaginable the new standard in wine."
By embracing technology, prioritising emotional connection, and democratising wine appreciation, Priscilla Hennekam is helping to ensure that this ancient beverage remains vibrant and relevant for generations to come.

Here's what you missed last week...
In the Barossa Valley, a new wine story is emerging—one that transforms broken ground into liquid gold. Biscay Road isn't just another wine label; it's a visionary collaboration between fourth-generation vigneron Alan Hickinbotham and design maestro David Byerlee. Together, they've crafted a brand that marries ancient Japanese Kintsugi philosophy with cutting-edge sustainable design.
Byerlee's ingenious label design tells a story beyond mere aesthetics, celebrating the fractured clay soils that define their terroir through intricate gold-foil cracks that mirror the landscape's resilience. By turning imperfection into art, Biscay Road creates wines that are as complex and compelling as the Barossa Valley itself. This week, we dive into a tale of tradition reimagined, where winemaking meets extraordinary design.
"Our goal was to create a label that speaks to both the past and the future. The gold foil isn't just a design element—it's a bridge between generations, a way of showing how tradition can be reimagined and celebrated."
Until next Tuesday, keep your glass full and your taste buds curious.
